Big Ideas in Te Ao Māori
BIG IDEA Māori world
This is an introduction to the Māori world. This course presents a Māori view of how we see the world, offering insights into topics that are often discussed and continue to shape contemporary life in New Zealand.
BIG IDEA World view
These include aspects of world view and cosmology, customs and values, mātauranga Māori, the Māori language, and performing arts. It will allow our mainstream students to have greater access to Te Ao Māori.
Pathways
Te Reo Māori & Communication: Experimenting with spoken, written, and visual communication, building foundational vocabulary, sentence structures, and linguistic patterns.
Key Competencies: Developing self-management, leadership, creative/critical thinking, and relational skills linked to personal identity and the environment.
Cultural Competency & Success: Connecting with community beyond the classroom to learn from examples of Māori success and deepen personal heritage connections
Key Competencies
in Te Ao Māori
- Students will develop self-managing skills and strategies that will enable them to know when to lead or follow, and when and how to act independently or collectively for the benefit of te ao Māori.
- Students will apply creative and critical thinking, as well as metacognitive processes to make sense of information, experiences and ideas which will inspire them to be lifelong learners of te reo and ao Māori.
- Students in tandem with learning tikanga Māori, will strengthen their own identity, therefore, providing a strong foundation for them to create and nurture relationships with others and the environment.
- The ideas, values and attitudes developed from a Māori worldview will enable students to be culturally confident and competent to participate in and contribute to Te Ao Māori and culture revitalisation within their communities.
