Physical and Personal Development - NCEA Level 1

Programme Description :

This course focuses on developing your personal and physical skills and abilities through a range of physical, outdoor, and group activities as well as self reflections and group discussions.

Learning Outcomes / Contexts:

The learning and development that this course focuses on is:

  • Resilience and perseverance
  • Self-management including time management, organisation, and kindness
  • Respect for self, others and the environment
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Identity and sense of self-worth
  • Self motivation, participation, and contributing
  • Improving Hauora (well-being)

This will occur through a range of activities which may include:

  • Modified and minor games
  • Problem solving activities
  • Team sports and games
  • Swimming and surf survival
  • Tramping and bushcraft
  • Rock climbing
  • Group discussions and reflection
  • Brainstorms and use of google docs.

Skills and Capabilities:

Resilience, perseverance, self management, interpersonal skills, motivation, participation, and contributing will be developed through physical and outdoor activities that will allow you to challenge yourself and extend your comfort zone. Respect for self, others, and the environment; identity and self-worth; and improving of hauora (well-being) will be developed through planning and reflection in class time as well as practical activities.

Assessment Opportunities:

Assessments will be a mix of practical, written and verbal. The majority will be internally assessed with the possibility of an external assessment. Level 1, 15 credits.

Physical Education - NCEA Level 2

Programme Description :

This course is designed for students who enjoy a range of practical contexts and want to develop their understanding of sport and fitness further.

Learning Outcomes / Contexts:

Learning and development in this course will include:

  • Develop and improve skill performance in sport contexts
  • Apply anatomical and biomechanical principles to sporting movements
  • Use training principles to design effective programmes
  • Interpersonal skills, social responsibility and leadership

Practical contexts may include:

  • Turbo Touch
  • Fitness programmes
  • Traditional and modified sports

Skills and Capabilities:

Working with a range of people, interpersonal skills, problem solving, effective communication. Social responsibility, resilience, perseverance.

Possibly leads to :

A range of practical and theoretical internal assessments. Level 2, 13 credits.

Physical Education - NCEA Level 3

Programme Description :

This course is designed for students with a passion for sport, movement, and physical activity. It supports students in developing advanced performance skills, leadership, and critical thinking. New for 2026 the course offers a dual pathway: students can work toward University Entrance through Achievement Standards, a vocational pathway through Unit Standards, or a blend of both , depending on their future goals.

Learning Outcomes / Contexts:

Students will:

  • Refine and apply skill performance in practical settings
  • Apply biomechanical and anatomical knowledge to movements
  • Evaluate and implement effective training programmes
  • Develop leadership and coaching strategies
  • Reflect on physical experiences to promote lifelong well-being
  • Learn how to design and deliver fitness-based exercise sessions

Vocational Pathway – Unit Standards (Up to 15 Credits):

Students may choose to complete practical, hands-on Unit Standards aligned with careers in sport, fitness, and health:

  • US 22771 – Plan beginner-level coaching sessions for sport participants (5 credits)
  • US 30933 – Instruct exercise sessions designed to meet individual needs (5 credits)
  • US 30447– Demonstrate and instruct exercises using a range of equipment (5 credits)

These standards focus on real-world coaching and exercise prescription skills and support pathways into the fitness and health industries.

University Entrance Pathway – Achievement Standards (Up to 16 Credits):

Students working toward University Entrance can complete Achievement Standards that focus on physical performance, applied science, and critical evaluation of experiences in sport and training contexts.

  • Up to 16 Level 3 credits
  • Standards are internally assessed through a range of physical and theoretical contexts
  • Students will develop interpersonal skills, social responsibility and practice leadership skills. Develop perseverance and resilience to improve skill and fitness levels. Students will learn to question and challenge assumptions made.

    *This course is UE approved as it uses assessments from the PE subject area. If you plan to take the L3 OEd course as well you must speak to the HOF of PE, Mr Adams.

    Health Education - NCEA Level 2

    Programme Description : This course is designed for students that wish to explore a range of health issues to gain understanding of how these issues influence self, others and society.

    Learning and development in this course will include:

    • Explore influencing factors on health issues
    • Develop strategies for enhancing well-being
    • Discuss social issues and suggest actions to promote social justice for self, others and society
    • Take collective action to enhance well-being within the school or wider community

    Health Education - NCEA Level 3

    Programme Description : This course is designed for students to develop critical thinking skills through researching a range of New Zealand health issues.

    Learning Outcomes/Contexts:

    • Focus on wider societal health issues and use evidence to critically analyse these issues
    • Use the determinants of health to understand how well-being of individuals, others and society is influenced
    • Ethical discussions to consider a range of viewpoints.

    Skills and Capabilities:

    Critical thinking, develop strategies for sustainable and health promoting options, collaborative working. Develop strategies to promote a fair, inclusive and non-discriminatory society.

    Outdoor Education

    Outdoor Education - NCEA Level 2

    Programme Description :

    This course is for students who enjoy the outdoors and the challenges and opportunities that outdoor activities provide.

    Learning Outcomes / Contexts:

    The learning and development that this course focuses on is:

    • Technical skills and the equipment needed for outdoor activities
    • Risk and safety management
    • Leadership and group management
    • Environmental awareness
    • Social Responsibility
    • You will come out with a better understanding of how to participate in outdoor activities as well as how to responsibly look after themselves, others and the environment.

    Outdoor activities may include:

    • Sea kayaking
    • Team building activities
    • Tramping
    • Rock Climbing
    • Mountain Biking
    • Whitewater Rafting.

    Perseverance, motivation, resilience, organisation, time management, collaboration and working with others, leadership, and effective communication.

    Outdoor Education - NCEA Level 3

    Programme Description :

    This course is built around rich, real-world experiences in the outdoors—most notably our surf camp, mountain biking, and tramping expeditions. It challenges students physically and mentally, while developing leadership, safety awareness, teamwork, and critical thinking.

    Students will explore the social and environmental impacts of adventure tourism, investigate safety management in outdoor settings, and develop strategies to support lifelong physical activity and well-being.

    In 2026, this course offers a dual pathway, meaning students can work toward University Entrance through Achievement Standards, pursue a vocational pathway through practical Unit Standards, or complete a blend of both to suit their strengths and future plans.

    • Participate in surf, mountain biking, and tramping-based experiences
    • Develop technical outdoor skills and personal fitness

    These Unit Standards offer practical, experience-based assessment aligned with real-world outdoor recreation and tourism:

    • US 32841Prepare for an overnight outdoor activity (3 credits)
    • US 32850Participate in and evaluate a self-contained multi-day trip (3 credits)
    • US 32876Demonstrate knowledge of weather processes and weather conditions for outdoor recreation in New Zealand (3 credits)

    University Entrance Pathway – Achievement Standards (up to 15 credits):

    Achievement Standards focus on:

    • Risk management strategies in challenging outdoor environments
    • Evaluating personal and group experiences in outdoor activities
    • Investigating adventure tourism’s influence on people and places in NZ
    • Planning for lifelong health, well-being, and participation in outdoor pursuits

    Assessment Opportunities:

    All assessments are internally assessed through practical application, written tasks, and reflective discussion linked to real outdoor experiences.

    Programme Description : This course focuses on developing personal practical skills in basic cookery, food and beverage service and may help students find basic employment and negotiate the next step of their lives post school.

    • Basic cookery skills
    • Basic beverage skills
    • Basic service skills
    • Basic event management

    Programme Description :

    This course is a mixture of both practical skills and theoretical knowledge. It is designed for students who love all things food. Students will develop an understanding of current issues relating to food, nutrition and health.

      This course is designed for students who love all things Food & Nutrition and who want to build on their existing knowledge base about lifestyle issues relating to Food and Nutrition.

      • Research the issues related to the provision of food for people with specific food needs
      • Investigate the relationship between well-being, food choices and the determinants of health
      • Investigate beliefs, attitudes and practices related to a nutritional issue for families in New Zealand
      • Research and evaluate sustainable food related practices.

        Programme Description :

        This course is designed for students who love all things Food & Nutrition and/or who are intending to study Human Nutrition, Health Sciences,Sports and Leisure, Sport and Exercise Science,Food Technology at tertiary level, or who want to build on their existing knowledge base about lifestyle issues relating to Food and Nutrition.

        Learning Outcomes / Contexts:

        • Investigate a nutritional issue affecting the well-being of New Zealand society
        • Investigate a food related ethical dilemma for New Zealand society
        • Investigate the influence of multinational food corporations on eating patterns in New Zealand
        • Investigate the influences of food advertising on well-being
        • Investigate a New Zealand health issue
        • Students can opt for a Sports nutrition bias.
