Area School Organisation

Mercury Bay Area School is an Area or Composite school consisting of three distinct learning groups all on one site. We cater for students aged five and 19 years of age and for every school year from Year 1 through to Year 13. Each of the three learning groups is led by a Deputy Principal and an Assistant Principal who are responsible for the learning and achievement, welfare, discipline, guidance, attendance and class placement of every student in their section of the school.

Raising Achievement Through Unity and Positivity

Our major focus is on student achievement. Our positive, caring and supportive learning environment enables each child to develop mentally, physically, socially and emotionally. Our school provides:

  • quality education
  • specialist programmes
  • a positive atmosphere
  • programmes for international students
  • co-curricular sporting and cultural opportunities.

Our Guiding Statement:

“Student centered learning and achievement—Students First”

We believe the whole learner is founded on an understanding of three fundamental beliefs and educational platforms;

  • Relational Trust: Quality Relationships
  • Personalised Student Journey: Pathways
  • Transformative Learning and Schooling: Effective Pedagogy.

School Board

The Board meet every month on a Thursday at 4.30pm in Room 10 - Gateway Room.*

The official work of a board gets done at board meetings.

Board meetings are not public meetings, but meetings held in public. The board fosters open and
transparent governance. It welcomes public attendance at, and observation of board meetings.
Members of the public include staff, students and parents’ families and whānau of the school
community, who are not members of the board.

Members of the public may request speaking rights on a particular item that is on the agenda.
Preferably, this request will have been made in advance. Public participation is at the discretion of the board. As a member of the public, if you would like an item added to the agenda, you will need to email the Board Secretary, or the Presiding Member, nine days prior to the meeting. Items added to the agenda are at the discretion of the board.

Seven days prior to the meeting the agenda goes live on the school website. If there is something you are interested in, you are welcome to attend the meeting as an observer. After the meeting, the board secretary produces the minutes. The board has up to seven days to approve the minutes and they are then posted on the website.

* with the exception of January.

Role of the School Board

"All of New Zealand's state and state-integrated schools have a school board. The school board is the Crown entity responsible for the governance and the control of the management of the school.

The board is the employer of all staff in the school, is responsible for setting the school's strategic direction in consultation with parents, staff and students, and ensuring that its school provides a safe environment and quality education for all its students. Boards are also responsible for overseeing the management of personnel, curriculum, property, finance and administration."
