From Constable Catherine Sell – School Community Officer

Welcome back from the school holidays! The sun shone and the fish were biting – life is good huh!

1st May is the start of Road Safety Week, although every week is, especially when our children are involved. I will be visiting as many schools as possible this week to deliver road safety related items and messages to your children.  Please go over some of the rules you have in your family to keep them safe – around cycling, walking, crossing roads and getting on and off school buses.

Recently I have been asked to talk to children about ‘stranger danger’.  This is a term we avoid using now, mainly because sadly, most abusers are known to the child, and sometimes they need to ask a person they don’t know for help. The Keeping Ourselves Safe programme which your child would have been taught within the past 2 years, gives children skills to identify how they feel if a situation or person makes them uncomfortable and what to do about it. Regardless of how big or small the matter is, it is important that they tell an adult that they trust what has happened. If a child discloses anything to you it is important that you listen to them, tell them you believe them and if necessary seek help from other sources.

School Closed Tomorrow 13th April

Kia Ora Whanau,

Due to the information we have gathered on Cyclone Cook from Civil Defence, TCDC, Met Service and the Ministry of Education, the Board of Trustees and I have decided that the school will be closed tomorrow (April 13th).

Please do not send your children to school.

The following Information has been received from TCDC

The Coromandel is on a full weather alert with the high possibility that Cyclone Cook will make landfall on the Coromandel in the next 24 hours.

Civil Defence is advising everybody to stock up on the supplies and medication today that will last at least 3 days.

"Everyone needs to be in a safe place and be prepared to sit it out for 24 hours or more," says Thames Valley Civil Defence Controller Garry Towler.

"Those planning to travel to or from the Coromandel from tonight through to Saturday, please delay your travel as the liklihood of slips and road closures is very high," says Mr Towler.

Residents need to be prepared for:
•       Flooding - the Coromandel is saturated from previous weather events
•       Multiple slips and debris flow (floods on steroids)
•       The likelihood of power loss
•       Road closures - both local Council roads and NZTA State Highways

Please keep safe and we will see you all in term 2.

Regards
Anne-Maree McDougall
Acting Principal

Severe Weather - Information

Kia Ora Whanau,
This is just a reminder that should there be any changes with buses, trips or even a school closure tomorrow due to the weather, that we will communicate in the first instance via
- our MBAS facebook page
- Coromandel FM
- email

The school office will be minimally staffed and taking calls.

We suggest in weather events like these that you are proactive in checking these communication channels before sending your child to school.

Wishing your a safe and happy Easter and Holidays.

Anne-Maree McDougall
Acting Principal

Bike & Scooter Safety

Please remind children to be safe on their scooters and bikes coming to and from school. There have been a couple of near misses at intersections and with pedestrians. Cook Drive gets quite congested after school, scooters should be aware of pedestrians and give way to them on the footpath please. Bicycles also need to give way to pedestrians and be aware of traffic entering and exiting side streets.
