Rugby
Secondary School Rugby, years 9-13, continues to grow in Mercury Bay and we compete well in our Thames Valley Secondary Schools competition.
There are many opportunities for Mercury Bay Area School students from our unique Across the River swim (an open water swim for Y7-13 students only)to a wide range of school events such as swimming, cross country and athletics.
Many of these afford students the opportunity to go on to compete at district, regional and even national level competition.
The New Zealand Area School Association supports a regional coaching clinic which allows senior students the opportunity to be selected for the elite Central North Island Area Schools team and progress to the ultimate goal of representing in at New Zealand Area Schools level. Mercury Bay Area school maintains a reputation for athletes representing in many of the Central North Island Area School codes and we expect this trend to continue in the future.
MBAS may also enter into the New Zealand Secondary School competitions. If students show the potential to compete at a national level then these opportunities are made available to the suitable candidates. In 2014 this has included NZ Secondary Schools Bowls, NZ Secondary Schools Surfing and NZ Secondary Schools Cycling. Opportunities in sport are not limited to playing a code, we have a number of students who are supported in a variety of coaching, managing and refereeing roles which allows many of these students to receive NCEA credits. If statistics or offering music at an event is how a MBAS student enjoys their sport – then opportunities will be given to them as well.
Mercury Bay Area School are very proud of the support we continue to receive from our local sport clubs particularly as this allows us to offer a wider range of sporting codes to students. Furthermore this relationship also allows our students the opportunity of experiencing coaching and management styles within our community. This collaborative and successful relationship is unique to Mercury Bay and is a model envied in the current New Zealand education and sport arena.
