Sports & Cultural
Activities

Leadership, personal development and learning is education outside the classroom.
Our school has built up a number of resources to give our students the chance for activities such as kayaking, camping and tramping. There are also opportunities for extended trips to major cities, Mount Ruapehu and Slipper Island at the various class levels. An important feature of our school’s leadership, personal development and learning is education outside the classroom (EOTC). Our local environment is used as a valuable resource for many subjects at all levels. Field trips to meet specific subject requirements are arranged by subject teachers at all levels and class teachers of Y4-6 students sometimes organise local, overnight camps. There are sports and cultural exchanges. Coaches of the senior teams, playing regularly at the weekends, may also arrange a sports trip for his or her team. There have been opportunities for sports teams to travel overseas for competition. Parental support for all these ventures is essential. The school plays a leading role in zone and National Area School sporting and cultural networks with a coaching clinic, NZ Area School national competitions and annual student leadership courses. Parents help supervise, transport and look after the students on trips and help students raise funds beforehand. We have had great help in the past and most parents find they actually enjoy the experience!

Performing Arts

At Mercury Bay Area School we are passionate about the Arts and believe that creativity is an essential part of education.

Extra-curricular Performing Arts include:

  • Kapa Haka group
  • Stage Challenge
  • Senior/Middle and Primary school productions
  • MBAS student jazz and rock bands

Music tuition includes:

  • Saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar, recorder, bass guitar and drums
  • Gigging opportunities around various local venues

We also offer Recording Engineering in our purpose built recording studio.

During the year we offer students performances and workshops by various visiting dance and drama production groups such as Ugly Shakespeare, Ensemble Impact as well as performances by visiting musicians and professional theatre groups.

For our NCEA levels 1, 2 and 3 Performing Arts students we head off site to experience the world of dance, music and theatre and all its aspects with both national and international artists sharing their expertise through performance and workshops.

Sport

There are many opportunities for Mercury Bay Area School students from our unique Across the River swim (an open water swim for Y7-13 students only)to a wide range of school events such as swimming, cross country and athletics.

Many of these afford students the opportunity to go on to compete at district, regional and even national level competition.

The New Zealand Area School Association supports a regional coaching clinic which allows senior students the opportunity to be selected for the elite Central North Island Area Schools team and progress to the ultimate goal of representing in at New Zealand Area Schools level. Mercury Bay Area school maintains a reputation for athletes representing in many of the Central North Island Area School codes and we expect this trend to continue in the future.

MBAS may also enter into the New Zealand Secondary School competitions. If students show the potential to compete at a national level then these opportunities are made available to the suitable candidates. In 2014 this has included NZ Secondary Schools Bowls, NZ Secondary Schools Surfing and NZ Secondary Schools Cycling. Opportunities in sport are not limited to playing a code, we have a number of students who are supported in a variety of coaching, managing and refereeing roles which allows many of these students to receive NCEA credits. If statistics or offering music at an event is how a MBAS student enjoys their sport – then opportunities will be given to them as well.

Mercury Bay Area School are very proud of the support we continue to receive from our local sport clubs particularly as this allows us to offer a wider range of sporting codes to students. Furthermore this relationship also allows our students the opportunity of experiencing coaching and management styles within our community. This collaborative and successful relationship is unique to Mercury Bay and is a model envied in the current New Zealand education and sport arena. Many of our sports are seasonal and therefore not available throughout the year. Our sporting resources include two gymnasiums, tennis courts, a large playing field, an outdoor swimming pool, rugby fields, soccer fields, cricket wicket/field, climbing wall and indoor basketball, volleyball, badminton and netball courts. Some of our sports are seasonal and are therefore not played throughout the year.
